Leighton presented a study for this composition to the Stadel, Frankfurt, in 1867 and there two more studies for it, in reverse of the print, in Leighton House Museum, London. The British Museum has an impression of the etching which they acquired from Christopher Mendez in 1970.

Inscribed in pen on the verso:
Fred did it and gave it to Gussy
But she didn’t twig it the little hussy

*Preserved in a small envelope inscribed in ink Fred’s etching, and below in pencil Hotel Metropole, Dieppe
‘Gussy’ was the only daughter and surviving child of Augusta Frances East and Sir Henry Ainslie Hoare, 5th Bt. she was painted by Leighton, a friend of her mother, at the age of 14.
